summer rain.

it's the kind you draw the curtains back for;
swing the door wide to welcome.
the kind that doesn't shy away the sun rays,
or darken the clouds.
little fingers reach.
little eyes watch.
mama always let us dance in rain like this.

a well-lit window.

it's a still morning.
days ago, the neighbors cut down their fig tree whose foliage had been our curtains since we moved in. we had felt so safe and tucked away, as if always in a tree house.
but nature's drapes have been drawn and we make a new acquaintance: light.
"i believe it's time for houseplants, my dear."
sunbeams push through clouds like eager passengers late for a train, stuck in the crowd. and i sit at the table looking out my new well-lit window.

Little Kitchen

This idea has been on the back burner for a while...no pun intended.  I have been thinking this up and drawing inspiration from Ikea and other wood play kitchens for a while and Christmas was the perfect time to  shoot for completing this project.

My dad is a carpenter and one of my favorite things in the world is to go to his shop, with him (and his decades of expertise) and create a project out of wood.  I had Benjamin Moore Pacific Ocean Blue paint on hand so I used that to save money on the finish.  I wanted some pretty wood accents so I used walnut from a tree cut down in my grandpa's back yard.  I bought a pot at Goodwill and ordered a stainless steel bowl for the sink.  When we presented it to the kids, they went straight to work boiling water for coffee and serving fake lunch.

The apron Clara is wearing was a hand made birthday gift from her Mimi!

Happy New Year!
love from Jan
